ALTAR
SOCIETY
|
The
Altar Society is a group of ladies who
volunteer each Friday to prepare the
church for the week-end masses. They keep
the altars clean, rearrange flowers for
the side altars, and make sure the pews
are picked up and adequately stocked with
missals and envelopes. One of the main
functions is to wash and iron the altar
linens. There are three groups of women
who work on a monthly basis, once every
three months. The work is done after the
8:00 am mass and takes about one hour. All
volunteers are welcome.

the Archdiocese, and the Pastor and Parish

sacrifice of all members of our parish.
This appeal begins in

GAMBLERS
ANONYMOUS
|
Gamblers
Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women
who share their experience, strength and
hope with each other that they may solve
their common problem and help others to
recover from a gambling problem. The only
requirement for membership is a desire to
stop gambling. There are no dues or fees
for Gamblers Anonymous membership; we are
self-supporting through our own
contributions. Gamblers Anonymous is not
allied with any sect, denomination,
politics, organization or institution;
does not wish to engage in any
controversy; neither endorses nor opposes
any cause. Our primary purpose is to stop
gambling and to help other compulsive
gamblers do the same. San Francisco G.A.

Martin de Porres Shelter. Parishioners are

Christmas trees displayed in the Church
and select a special gift as requested on
the tag to be returned in time for

LITURGY
COMMITTEE
|
The
St. Stephen Liturgy Committees role
is advisory. It assesses the needs of the
worshiping assembly and regularly
evaluates practices to see that those
needs are being met. The committee
provides direction for those who prepare
liturgies. It provides for the liturgical
education of all parishioners. The liturgy
committee promotes the development of
competent liturgical ministers. It sets
goals for the progress of the liturgical
life of the parish; and helps the parish
see the connection between worship and
Christian living. The Liturgy Committee
meets nine times annually.

LITURGICAL
MINISTERS
|
The
ministry of Eucharistic Ministers is a
very rewarding and spiritual service to
the Church and fellow parishioners. On a
personal level, it is a humbling privilege
to help the priest distribute Holy
Communion. There is great flexibility in
scheduling, and you will only be assigned
to masses which you usually attend. If you
are a parent of an altar server, you will
be scheduled together. A short training
session will prepare you for the ministry.
I hope you will consider joining us and I
know you will enjoy your service to St.
Stephen Parish.
If you are interested in the above
ministries, please contact Tom
Perlite.

St.
MARTIN de PORRES
|
St.
Martin de Porres includes a community of
people with diverse spiritual practices,
although their roots are in, and continue
to be inspired by the Catholic Worker
Movement. Begun by Dorothy Day and Peter
Maurin in 1933, the Catholic Worker
philosophy and ideal are carried out by
upwards of 200 houses worldwide in various
works of mercy in the spirit of "gentle
personalism." In San Francisco, Martin's
is a free restaurant servicing breakfast
and lunch during the week and brunch on
Sundays. Its mission is to serve in the
spirit of compassion, understanding and
love. St. Stephen contributes to St.
Martin de Porres through volunteers at
Martin's and donations made through the
Giving Tree at Christmas.

SOCIAL
JUSTICE GROUP
|
This
is a brand new group in the parish whose
purpose is to respond to social needs by
encouraging parish education,
participation and outreach in addressing
injustices within and outside the parish.
The group has highlighted such issues as
supporting Fair Trade Practices,
suggesting that when we choose to buy fair
trade products we are making a strong
connection with hardworking, but
impoverished workers around the world. The
CRS Fair Trade network guarantees fair
wages to disadvantaged artisans, farmers
and workers.
