Dear Parishioners,

February 1, 2009

A terrific thanks to all of you who supported our Men's Club Superbowl Boards by purchasing one or more squares. All squares were sold! This annual drive helps to fund our athletic program, sports gear, gym fees, CYO fees etc... Hats off to Marco Cerri and his helpers who successfully pulled it off in this tough year of economic recession. Great job, guys!

We warmly welcome Bishop Bill Justice to St. Stephen today to administer the sacrament of Confirmation to 38 young parishioners, drawn from our school and our religious education program.

Mark your calendars for three Tuesday evenings in Lent with Fr. Dave Pettingill. Father Dave, a wise and witty presenter, will be our Lenten Soup Suppers speaker this year. This will be an opportunity to take a fresh and deeper look at what it means to be a Christian in today's crazy world. Each evening (March 17, 24, and 31) will begin at 6:30 with a light supper of salad, soup and garlic bread, and followed at 7:15 by Fr. Pettingill's presentation and discussion.

We are reading St. Mark's Gospel these Sundays at Mass, and today's gospel story shows us Jesus working a miracle; he casts out a demon from a man and restored the man him to wholeness, normality and peace. We listen to many healing stories of Jesus during the year. Did they really happen? Do miracles really happen?

A few years ago, I read a book called "The Miracle of Lourdes." Lourdes is a town in the mountains of southern France and its little streets are thronged with pilgrims all year round. Ever since the Blessed Mother appeared there to St. Bernadette in 1858, over two thousand miraculous healings have reportedly taken place at Lourdes. The Catholic Church is very slow to accept miracles and will stand by only sixty of these cures, although the doctors at the International Medical Bureau call them miraculous.

The Medical Bureau is staffed, not by pious Catholics, but by atheists and agnostics and very secular empirical laboratory scholars. If you claim a miracle, you've got to bring a stack of x-rays and doctors' sworn affidavits.

The lady who wrote "The Miracle of Lourdes," Dr. Cranston, was not a Catholic but a kind of atheist, and she went to Lourdes to expose it as a fraud. She stayed. She documented. She looked at all the medical bureau material and began to believe. She became a Catholic. Her book is a great read. It's not a pious journal but tells the human story of terminal illness and incredible miracles.

As you listen to today's gospel story of the unclean spirit being cast out, you might want to utter a silent prayer that the demon in your own heart that robs you of peace and keeps you awake at night may be removed through the power of God.

Your Pastor,
Fr. Joe

Wise Words From St. Paul

If I speak like an angel, but do not have love,
I am nothing more than a noisy drum
and a useless, pointless cymbal.
If I speak like a prophet, know everything,
and have an IQ that beats the band,
but do not have love, I am nothing.
If I donate all my possessions,
even put my very body on the line,
but do not have love, I gain nothing.
Love is patient and kind.
It is not jealous, pompous, arrogant or rude.
It is not self-seeking or ill-tempered.
It doesn't brood over injury
or rejoice over anyone's misfortune.
In all circumstances it rejoices with the truth.
Love bears all things,
is open to believe all things,
hopes all things and endures all things.
Love never fails.

(cf. 1 Corinthians 13: 1-8)

Just Fools February
BOOK CLUB
A New Adventure!
Deacon Dan invites 10 people to join
him in reading
“Three Cups of Tea”
by Greg Mortenson, David Oliver Relin.

This is a book about a Peace Corps like hero, Greg Mortenson, a one-man Peace Corps for the twentyfirst century. His Central Asia Institute as of 2005 has built 53 schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan, each with the help of local communities and with a curriculum approved by the government.

Award-winning journalist David Oliver Relin tells the awesome story of this driven young man who has worked humanitarian wonders in a region of the world where Americans are despised for their bombing campaigns and apparent indifference to the plight of civilians. Mortenson is family to thousands of Muslims in small villages and refugee camps.

Discover why this young man got involved in a crusade of love & kindness. Read and discuss what one man from San Francisco did and then imagine what you can do!

Mortenson is a spiritual hero for these bad times, providing a model of selfless service and hope for the family of humanity. He carries on the tradition of spiritual masters from all the world's religions who teach that the greatest form of heroism is to turn an enemy into a friend. Contact Deacon Dan to be part of the group (Drosen1949@aol.com or 285-3849)
