Dear Parishioners,

January 4, 2009

A Blessed and Happy New Year to you all! Thank you to our staff, volunteers, and co-workers who put in so much effort to make the Christmas Season such a joy for everyone who came to St. Stephen. You have been terrific with your presence, prayers and participation. Many of you have shared Seasonal greetings with myself, Frs. Ed and Len, Deacons Gary and Dan, Pastoral Associates Veronica and Ruby, and staff. Please know that we may not get a chance to write or thank you personally. Just know that we are grateful and you are great!

Today's feast of the Epiphany brings to our attention the age-old story of the Magi's visit to the cave at Bethlehem. We know the story, the facts: they journeyed from the East, following a star, and sought directions in Jerusalem to the newborn king. After a dubious encounter with the infanticidal King Herod, they followed the directions given them by the experts in Jerusalem and arrived at the cave where they did homage to the Child, offering gifts and returning home by a different route.

We've known the facts since we were kids. We can tell the story. But what does the story mean? For me, it grandstands the contemporary tension between 'spirituality' and 'faith religion.' I often meet people who say they are 'spiritual' but not 'religious.' Some will quote Oprah's book, "Live Your Best Life," others will quote "The Seat of the Soul," a primer of New Age thought by Gary Zuker, and say 'spirituality' is really the way to go.

The Magi came out of a star-gazing society. The star-gazers of ancient Persia tried to discern in the stars what their gods had in store for them. The Magi were god-seekers and their star led them to Jerusalem. In Jerusalem, they sought advice from the Jewish religious experts. "Where is the new-born King of the Jews?" they wanted to know. The chief priests and scribes and experts in the law pointed them in the right direction.

In the darkness of the Bethlehem cave, the Magi saw the true light of the world. They encountered the God of Jesus Christ, the very personal, demanding God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of Moses, Samuel and David, the God who seeks people out and makes life-style demands. In the encounter, they realized they could no longer seek God on their own terms, but on God's. This God demanded that they return to their country by another way. They obeyed. They had to change their plans, adopt a new direction for their lives, and deal with this God no longer on their own terms.

This, I suggest to you today, is the main difference between a new-age, non-denomination type spirituality and the faith-based religion of Christianity, especially Catholicism. Judeo-Christian religions believe in a God who pro-actively seeks us out and makes a personal appeal to us to conform to his plan.

St. Paul appealed to us last Sunday to "let the word of God dwell in you richly, in all wisdom…”

An ancient Christian axiom says that "ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ." The Magi first went to the Jewish scripture experts, and from them learned where Jesus Christ was to be found.

And so, dear Parishioners, I invite you to make one of your 2009 resolutions to become better acquainted with the Bible and, through the Bible, with the God of Jesus Christ.

Your Pastor,
Fr. Joe

Happy New Year

May you get a clean bill of health from your dentist, your cardiologist, your gastro-enterologist, your urologist, your proctologist, your podiatrist, your psychiatrist, your plumber and the I.R.S.

May your hair, your teeth, your face-lift, your abs and your stocks not fall; and may your blood pressure, your triglycerides, your cholesterol, your white blood count and your mortgage interest not rise.

May what you see in the mirror delight you, and what others see in you delight them. May someone love you enough to forgive your faults, be blind to your blemishes, and tell the world about your virtues.

May the commercials on TV not be louder than the program you have been watching, and may your check book and your budget balance - and include generous amounts for church and charity.

May you remember to say "I love you" at least once a day to your spouse, your child, your parent, your siblings; but not to your secretary, your nurse, your masseuse, your hairdresser or your tennis instructor.

And may we live in a world at peace and with the awareness of God's love in every sunset, every flower's unfolding petals, every baby's smile, every lover's kiss, and every wonderful, astonishing, miraculous beat of our heart.
