Dear
Parishioners,
|
November
2, 2008
|
|
As you can see,
the builders are back on
the job. No, they didn't
go to Ireland with me!
The finalization of
plans for the
underground plumbing
took longer than we had
anticipated. We are back
on track and we don't
anticipate further
delays for the duration
of the
construction.
Our Athletic
Director, Kurt Bruneman,
tells me that playoffs
and championship games
for girls' volleyball
begins this Tuesday and
will continue through
November 16th. This
Saturday (Nov 1st) sees
the beginning of the
postseason for boys'
soccer. Kurt is looking
for girls' soccer
coaches and boys'
basketball coaches. If
you've coached before
and would like to try it
again, please give Kurt
a call at (415)710-5047.
More information about
what's happening in the
sports department can be
found on our website by
clicking on
"Athletics."
Mrs. Allen, our
School Principal,
writes: "The best part
of my job is the time I
spend with your
children. I love the
children at St. Stephen
School and consider it
an honor and privilege
to be their principal.
We have a terrific
faculty and staff at St.
Stephen School. I am
honored to work with
them and appreciate the
professional ands caring
manner they show their
students. Finally we
have super parents... We
have much to be proud of
our school."
Two very fine
parishioners went to God
while I was away: Lola
Lommori and Bob
O'Malley. May they rest
in peace. We remember
them today (especially
their spouses Pio and
Barbara respectively),
and all our near and
dear ones who have
entered into the
fullness of God's
kingdom, as we celebrate
All Souls' Day this
Sunday.
On this feast and
the days which surround
it, the Hispanic
communities celebrate
the "Day of the Dead."
Family members visit the
graves of their deceased
and bring with them the
dead person's favorite
foods. At the grave,
family and friends,
adults and children,
have a picnic: they tell
stories of their dead
and share the food they
brought.
We don't have to
be of Hispanic descent
to celebrate the lives
of our deceased family
and friends. Aren't we
doing something similar
when we gather for the
Eucharist this day? We
share stories from the
scriptures, the family
stories we have in
common as Christians. We
then eat the "favorite
foods" that nourished
them: the Eucharistic
bread and wine that
sustained them in their
living and dying, and
that gives us hope that
someday we will again
eat at a banquet table
with one another and the
risen Lord.
In our part of the
globe it is Autumn and
nature seems to be
"passing away" around
us. But we have firm
hope that, after a
season of rest and
bareness, the earth will
come alive again. We
also have a secure hope,
based on Jesus' promise
to us, that he has given
us eternal life and
that, with him and one
another, we shall rise
"on the last
day."

Marriage: Bishops Statement in
Support of Proposition
8
The
issue before us with Proposition 8 is
marriage- - - an ancient, yet
modern, human institution which pre-exists
both Church and government. Marriage,
history shows us, is intrinsic to stable,
flourishing and hospital societies.
Although cultural differences have
occurred, what has never changed is that
marriage is the ideal relationship between
a man and a woman for the purpose of
procreation and the continuation of the
human race.
We
must support traditional marriage as the
source of our civilization, the foundation
for a society that can be home to all
human beings, and the reflection of our
relationship with God.
- - - California Conference of Catholic
Bishops
A
Prayer for Election Day
The
debates are over. The ads, positive and
negative, are ending. We will, within a
couple of days, choose a president, a
vice-president, and national, state and
local legislators to lead our country,
which has been so richly blest. This is
our responsibility. It is a time for
prayer to take the place of arguments and
yard signs. Below is a prayer provided by
our US Catholic Bishops for use in this
election season.
- "Gracious
and loving God, let your Spirit be with
us today. Hear our prayers and increase
in us the will to follow your Son,
Jesus. Help us to draw on the resources
of our faith as we use the
opportunities of our democracy to shape
a society more respectful of the life,
dignity, and rights of the human
person, especially the poor and the
vulnerable. We ask this in Jesus' name.
Amen."

information on the grieving process,
strategies for "getting through" the
holiday season and support. If you are
interested in joining the Grief Support
Group, please see Deacon Dan and Dr. Ruby
after Mass or contact them at the Parish
Center.
Marriage:
Catechism of the Catholic
Church
Crystallizing
the teaching on marriage, the Catechism of
the Catholic Church proclaims: God himself
is the author of marriage. The vocation to
marriage is written in the very nature of
man and woman as they came from the hand
of the Creator.
Marriage
is not a purely human institution despite
the many variations it may have undergone
through the centuries in different
cultures, social structures, and spiritual
attitudes. The well-being of the
individual person and of both human and
Christian society is closely bound up with
the healthy state of conjugal and family
life.
- - -Catechism of the Catholic Church
(1603, 1604)
THE
EUCHARIST
Just
as the bread, which is made from the
earth, when God is invoked is no longer
common bread but the Eucharist, both
earthly and heavenly, so our bodies, after
we have received the Eucharist, are no
longer corruptible, since they hold the
hope of the resurrection. - St.
Irenaeus
